  • Description: The Safely Surrendered Baby Law law's intent is to save the lives of newborn infants at risk of abandonment by encouraging parents or persons with lawful custody to safely surrender the infant within 72 hours of birth, with no questions asked. Safe surrender sites are hospitals or other locations, typically fire stations. To find the nearest safe surrender site, call 1-877-BABYSAF (1-877-222-9723) The law allows for a 14-day period from the date of the initial surrender for the parent to reclaim the baby. The parent should contact their county Child and Family Services Agency to reclaim and begin the process of obtaining custody. If a parent is attempting to reclaim after the 14 days, another process will be initiated. The county Child and Family Services Agency can also assist with this.
